MCA at the crossroads after 60 years

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 — "The Chinese are up and standing!"

That was the famous remark of renowned statesman Mao Tse Tung after declaring the formation of the world's most populated nation — the People’s Republic of China — at Tianamen square in Beijing on Oct 1, 1949.

Now, some nearly 60 years later, including 30 years of embracing an open-door policy, China has finally arrived at the international scene, controlling about 30 per cent of the world economy.

While China as a nation has charted its course successfully, the Malaysian Chinese Association, better known as MCA, is still at crossroads looking for the elusive edge that would ensure that it stays in the hearts and minds of the Chinese community in the years to come.

This largest Chinese-based political party in the country was founded in the same year as the formation of mighty China, only a few months earlier. The party was formed on Feb 27, 1949 and today is its 60th birthday.

While plans are under way for a birthday bash this Sunday at the party headquarters, a pertinent question that lingers on the minds of the people and party members is whether the MCA has served its purpose of being the political vehicle for the Chinese populace in Malaysia.

If the answer is in the affirmative, then the next question that pops up is — where is this party with more than a million members heading after 60 years?

This is what the party's top echelon intends to answer on Sunday. The 2,500 grassroots leaders gathered at Dewan San Choon at the MCA headquarters will be presented with details on the party's future direction.

With the theme, "60 Years of Building Dreams, A Lifelong Commitment to Service", the party has already set out its agenda to transform itself to be a party of the people's choice, especially after suffering its worst electoral defeat since the nation's independence in the March 8, 2008 general election.

It was with this reform agenda that Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat won the presidency at the party polls last October.

"The biggest challenge now is how to restore the confidence of the Chinese community towards the MCA. After last year's general election, the Chinese are still generally unhappy with the Barisan Nasional government. This is the most challenging thing," former MCA secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Ting Chew Peh told Bernama.

He said the MCA must offer "something more concrete" and not spend too much time on petty or personal issues in charting its next political direction.

"They have been talking about change, but nothing much has changed. The people have yet to see anything concrete. It is high time that the current leadership showed a clear direction for MCA members.

"What is important is action, not rhetoric. Generally, people want to see change. That is obvious," said Dr Ting.

The head of the party's Elders Council, Datuk Yap Pian Hon, feels that the MCA should explore the option of adopting the ideology that it is for all Malaysians regardless of race or religion.

He said the party could use its 60 years' experience of political struggle in adopting this approach.

"In the coming years, it is crucial for our party members to understand that there will be a two-party system in the country. Whether it happens or not, we have to face it.

"Therefore, we are really at the crossroads now. You change or be changed, that's about it," he said, adding that the party must also have the determination to change.

Former MCA deputy president Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek argued that the party needed to undertake drastic and bold reforms, not only on the political front but also on the conduct and behaviour of its members.

He said MCA politicians should be perceived as clean, not only from corruption and any other wrongdoings, but also on matters relating to morality.

"We need to take action. We cannot sweep things under the carpet anymore. We need to show members, especially the grassroots, that nobody is above the law.

"We need to change, go for reform and be bold about it. We need to deliver, no two ways about it," said the former human resources minister.

Ong, in his manifesto at the party polls last year, stressed the need for the party to undergo a rebranding and reinvention exercise, starting with reforms based on the people's aspiration.

This included direct election of the MCA president, election of the state liaison committee, the system of selection of office bearers, widening the MCA community network through inter-ethnic interaction.

Now, Ong is expected to use the 60th anniversary bash to provide details of these reforms.

Ong, in an interview published in the MCA online website, said that reforms would be based on the wish list provided by the people and party members.

"We have to identify any impending issues or problems affecting the Chinese community now and look seriously into how to resolve them. If we fail to resolve the issues now, we cannot move ahead in fighting for the interests of the people," he was quoted as saying.

However, this is easier said than done. In reality, it would not be that easy to initiate changes which could make a real impact on the masses.

And to make a real impact on Chinese Malaysians, the MCA needs to speak with one voice, move in one direction and, more importantly, have the interests of the community at heart at all times. — Bernama

Sultan sympathises with Eli but won't interfere

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 25 – The Sultan of Selangor is unhappy that Eli Wong’s privacy has been violated but he does not want to be involved in a decision about her political career.

The sultan’s private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, said this was expressed by the sultan when Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had an audience with the ruler today to brief him on the political developments in the state and to get his advice on the issue involving Wong, who had offered to resign because of the pictures.

“The sultan had commanded me to inform that his royal highness could not offer any guidance or advice to the menteri besar in the matter related to Wong as it was still under police investigation and that it involved her political position.

“It is his stance as the Sultan of Selangor to be above politics,” Mohamad Munir said in a statement sent to Bernama here today.

Following is the full statement by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, over the controversy involving Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman Elizabeth Wong.

I am pleased to inform that Yang Amat Berhormat Tan Sri Dato’ Abdul Khalid Bin Ibrahim, the Dato’ Menteri Besar Selangor has sought an audience with His Royal Highness, The Sultan of Selangor, on Wednesday, 25th February 2009 and duly informed His Royal Highness on the political development and the issue which involved Yang Berhormat Elizabeth Wong Keat Ping, the Selangor State Assemblyman for Bukit Lanjan who is also the State Selangor Exco Member.

His Royal Highness, The Sultan of Selangor, has commanded me to inform that His Royal Highness could not offer any guidance or advice to the Yang Berhormat Dato’ Menteri Besar of Selangor in the matter related to the issue of Yang Berhormat Elizabeth Wong Keat Ping as it was still under police investigation and it involved her political position. It is His Royal Highness’ stance as the Sultan of Selangor to be above politics.

His Royal Highness believes that whatever decision that is going to be made by the Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Menteri Besar of Selangor will made with accurateness, fair and with wisdom by taking into consideration the interest of the Rakyat in particular and the State of Selangor generally. His Royal Highness is upset and worried as of late the intrusion of someone’s privacy and private rights was being used to destroy one’s dignity and reputation. It is a sad thing as one’s life and private rights were being made public and subject to public scrutiny by publicising in the mass media.

To Yang Berhormat Elizabeth Wong, His Royal Highness felt sad and sympathised with her as to the unfortunate event she had suffered and hoped that Yang Berhormat Elizabeth Wong will remain calm and be patient in continuing with her life henceforth.

Dato’ Haji Mohamad Munir bin Bani

Dato’ Lela Bakti Private Secretary to His Royal Highness

The Sultan Of Selangor

Wong, 37, tendered her resignation to Khalid on Feb 17.

She is now believed to be abroad and has reiterated her stand to resign as state assemblyman and also state executive councillor despite advice from the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leadership to reconsider her decision while on leave.

Wong, who is Wanita PKR information chief, won the Bukit Lanjan state seat in the March 2008 general election after defeating Barisan Nasional's Datin Paduka Yong Dai Ying with a 5,155-votes majority. – Bernama

Xenri Japanese Restaurant

Xenri, the cozy little Japanese restaurant where SugarBean’s write up on it is being published on The Star Sunday Metro last week.

Upon entering, we were greeted with the burnished warmth of bamboo plants, wood lacquered floor, elegant brown tables that will calm your senses

The interior of this Japanese restaurant offers visitors to dine in calm surroundings with the serene sound of flowing water. We also enjoyed the easy listening and relaxing music.

xenri

It seems like the talk of town is no longer Tenji Japanese Buffet as everyone has changed their attention to Xenri - with a larger buffet spread and a much lower price instead! Read from boo’s post that said it’s really hard to get through to Xenri’s line and this is so true! I’ve been calling them for the past few days and the line is either engaged or you’ll get directed to voice mail.

Since Menara Hap Seng is fairly near to my office, so I went to check out the place during lunch time. What greeted me is……a big notice that reads “50% Buffet Promotion is FULLY BOOKED. Thank You”. What a big let down and it’s really amazing that how efficient is KLites when it comes to good deals! They do accept walk-ins, provided that there is a last minute cancellation. The chances are probably low……

Is there anyone who manages to secure a place or two? Can we tag along? RM 27.50++ for lunch and RM 34.00 ++ for dinner seem so reasonable. We have been to their first outlet at Wisma Elken and RM30 can’t even buy you a proper bento set. Do let us know your buffet experience here. :)

Though we’ve been to this restaurant many times but we still haven’t post about this yet. Anyway, it’s time to introduce you all to this fantastic Japanese restaurant.

Xenri is located in Wisma Elken which is right across Pearl Point Hotel. We like the ambience here. The exterior and the interior of the restaurant were very nicely designed and decorated.

The interior was bright and clean, a very comfortable place for a soft chat if there weren’t many customers.

We had a mini kaiseki set for RM68 which our food is selected and prepared by the chef. The traditional Japanese course dinner include an appetiser, a selection of sashimi, soup, baked scallops, a simmered dish, a cold noodle and finally a dessert. We started with our appetiser, they were quite good, no complaints about it. Perhaps we were too hungry that night, we even finished the natto beans that we previously don’t eat.

They served the soup after the appetiser. They served clear soup instead of miso soup. The soup was on the salty side but it was quite flavourful overall.

What we’re anticipating for when we have Japanese food have arrived finally, their sashimi was served in a very special presentation. It looks so cute, especially from behind. Anyway, what’s inside the little igloo were very fresh and delicious. We finished every thing inside including the seaweed.

Here's a closer look of the sashimi.

Next, we were served with these 2 baked scallops. The scallops were very large and juicy and it tasted fantastic with the mayonnaise and cheese dressing. We enjoyed every bite of it.

The unagi was simmered instead of the usual kabayaki style. The simmered unagi was served with egg and mushroom, it tasted quite delicious. The soup was very flavourful too.

For the last main course of the mini kaiseki set, we had this somen cold noodles. It was served very cold, simply nice and delicious.

Other than the mini kaiseki set, we also ordered a kinoko kame meshi aka mushroom with rice cooked in special pot for RM35. Since we have yet to try this before, we decided to give it a try. However, it wasn’t as good as we expected it to be. Even though the amount of ingredients served was generous, the rice wasn’t fragrant. But when eaten with pickles, it was better.

The dessert included in the mini kaiseki set is the mochi ice-cream. It wasn’t very sweet but very rich in flavour. The ice-cream melted slowly as you chewed the outer layer of the mochi. We enjoyed this dessert a lot.

One dessert simply just can’t satisfy me. After looking at their dessert menu, I simply can’t resist ordering this ice-cream pancake for RM13. Originally, vanilla ice-cream was served. But for an additional RM5, we requested the chef to change the vanilla ice-cream to green tea ice-cream. We were delighted when the dessert was served. The serving was large, the ice-cream tasted fantastic and the pancake was absolutely delicious! The warm and slightly crispy pancake and the green tea ice-cream made a perfect match. Do check this dessert out if you visit this restaurant!

Xenri also offers buffet lunch on every Sunday for RM50 plus per person if we're not mistaken. We have yet to try it out but would try it out some time later. The price for this restaurant was quite reasonable and they serve quality food. Do check it out if you can!

Akamomiji - The Latest Japanese Restaurant in Ipoh?

Sunday, February 22, 2009

Akamomiji has piqued my interest since its renovation period sometime during the Chinese New Year. Located in Medan Ipoh Bistari (yup, don't you get that sense of deja vu ....), this latest addition to Ipoh's line up of Japanese restaurants opened few days ago to much fanfare, almost fully booked every evening, and prior reservation seems to be the norm, lest you decide to casually waltz in and capitalize on the furore/chaos that is surrounding almost all newly-opened outlets. Josephine Cafe and David's Diner come to mind, naturally.
Occupying 2 shoplots of space, the restaurant is brighter than its counterpart, Kizuna, and a tad more spacious. With a sushi bar that can seat about 5 guests
Service was far from satisfactory however, let alone impeccable. But given the fact that the place is rather new; the new staff and new management deserve a second chance (least in my humble opinion) and time to improve before being put on the gallows. I mean, before passing any judgmental opinions. Some may disagree on this, I'm sure, as discerning diners may categorize first impression as a make-or-break experience, and the proprietor's better impressed, or else.
But seriously, this IS Ipoh after all, whereby quality and quantity of the food comes first, while dining experience comes a close (or distant) second. And credits to be given where credits are due, all the staff were in fact, rather friendly and approachable. Just lacking in terms of training, and more vitally, hands-on experience. Imagine to be seated and without any menu nor attention for a good 5 minutes. But with that said, the waitress was rather accomodating, topping up our cups of green tea every now and then.
Chuka Wakame @ RM4.80
OK, let's move on to the food. Before that, Ipohans must have heard about Kizuna japanese restaurant? Situated a stone's throw away from Kizuna, the owner of Akamomiji is in fact, from the management of Kizuna. Still on good terms or not, I don't know. But for sure this is a strong contender to Kizuna (and even Waraku, to some extent), business-wise, as all of them are located within the same area.
Chuka Idako @ RM4.80
Our orders got mixed up somehow, and we were served more dishes than we initially ordered. But we relented and gobbled up everything that was put in front of us. Such hungry souls eh?
The appetizers of marinated seaweed (Chuka Wakame) and marinated baby octopus (Chuka Idako) came in dainty portions, but served their functions as appetizers well. Sweet, slightly tangy, and spicy (for the seaweed), the appetizers teased the palate for more to come. The baby octopus were crunchy to the bite, served on a bed of julienned cucumbers. Refreshing.

Unagi and Tamago Sushi

Kyushu Nigiri Sushi (Platter of 9 pcs) @ RM25.80

The staff explained that the fishes are freshly flown in from Japan every Tuesdays and Fridays. Hmm, Waraku (yet to blog, later) seems to import their supplies on the same days as well. Suspicious?
It's already Sunday, (meaning we could be savouring on Friday's supplies) the slices of fish remained fresh, sweet and succulent. Especially tempting was the roes (tobiko?), VERY 'crunchy' and QQ, every bite released squirts of juices. A far cry from Sushi King's, believe me.
Ebi Kisu Tenpura @ RM16.80
The prawns and fish tenpura was disappointing though. Not exactly LARGE prawns, the platter consisted of 2 prawns, a slice of fish, and a piece or two of vege only. And the batter was nothing to shout about, nor was the accompanying generic tenpura sauce.

Una Jyu @ RM23.80
We were served with the Una Jyu (grilled eel with sweet teriyaki sauce on rice), something none of us ordered. And we digged in before realizing it was not in our order list. Oh, but what the heck, the thick, juicy and well-marinated slabs of eel were perfectly grilled, with its juice retained, and none of the cold, fishy taste. Thumbs up to the unagi!!! With complementary miso soup.

Chicken Teriyaki Jyu @ RM11.80
The chicken was succulent, and tender. Simply served with strips of seaweed, and sprinkling of sesame seeds. Sufficient to be a complete meal, or a light lunch. Also came with a bowl of miso soup.

Ninmiku Chahan @ RM3.80
And ultra-light eaters can order any of their variety of fried rice, from garlic to crab fried rice and silver anchovies fried rice. The garlic fried rice was good; fluffy and fragrant from the garlic cloves, perfect as an ala carte order to complement your salads, grilled meats, hot pots, or even the kushiyaki (which sadly, was not available this particular evening). They serve okono-miyaki (japanese omelettes) as well, but unfortunately was not available for orders on this visit.

On the whole, the meal was above average, with rather reasonable prices to boot. The meal costed less than RM100 for the four of us. But of course, we did not go crazy with the orders nor order any sashimi, given the fact that it's 2 days too late to sample their freshly flown supplies from Japan. But there's always another visit, when the craving comes, ya? :)
Location : AKAMOMIJI JAPANESE RESTAURANT @ 36-38, Medan Ipoh 1E, Medan Ipoh Bistari, 31400 Ipoh, Perak. Tel : 605-546 8368. It's directly opposite the row of shops with SSTC Italian Cafe, Kafe Tim Curry Mee, and Serai Sate Kajang. Visit any of those links for directions.

Sandakan death march pulling Aussies to Sabah

Published: Sunday February 22, 2009

MELBOURNE: Sabah is attracting an increasing number of Australian tourists, many wanting to cover the seven-day trek along the treacherous route taken by World War II prisoners of war in the infamous Sandakan death march.

"Our postwar heritage listing has drawn thousands of visitors from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom who have historical links with Sabah," Sabah Tourism Board marketing manager Noredah Othman said in Melbourne.

Over 1,000 Australian and British PoWs were forced to march across 260km of difficult terrain and dense tropical jungle from the Sandakan prison camp to Ranau between January and March 1945.

Only six Australian PoWs survived.

"Sabah had 26,071 tourist arrivals from Australia last year, an increase of 25 per cent from 2007 when 20,859 people visited us," she said.

There were also arrivals from Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Ireland and from mainland Peninsular Malaysia.

"Although we enjoyed good results, we have to work harder to push our destination. We cannot sit on our laurels," Noredah said.

"We are focusing on special interest groups because we have firstclass facilities and attractions, some very unique to the world."

Sabah had the largest Malaysian contingent at the twoday AsiaPacific Incentives and Meeting Expo (AIME) here last week, and Noredah said she was pleased with the many inquiries.

Noredah lamented the lack of direct flights between Australian cities and Kota Kinabalu.

"We desperately want an airline any airline to start an AustraliaSabah service. Our tourist arrivals will swell significantly if this is available," she said. - Bernama
