A Kampar “Lou Shu Fun” Specialist @ Bercham, Ipoh

Dry Lou Shu Fun with Minced Meat

Lou Shu Fun/Law Shi Fen (Rat’s Tail Noodles aka Silver Needle Noodles) with their signature tantalizing topping of minced meat in a delicious gravy, and of course, the crunchy bean sprouts of Ipoh!!!

Call the short, stubby, glistening and smooth rice noodles in whichever manner you want. Rat’s tail noodles. Silver needle noodles. Mee Tai Bak. Laksa noodles (this is wrong though, for in laksa we use ‘lai fun’ instead). Rice noodles. Or just plain …. “Lou Shu Fun“.

One thing for sure, you can’t go wrong with a bowl of DRY (“kon lou” in Cantonese) version of Lou Shu Fun topped with generous ladles of the delectably-moreish minced meat in gravy. And where’s the best place for this simple hawker fare? Kampar of course.

Variety of Yong Liew (Stuffed Fish Paste)

An array of “Yong Liew” (better known as Yong Tau Foo elsewhere) for your picking.

But of course, Kampar being a good 40 kilometres away from Ipoh, and the famous Kampar market only opens in the morning, it’s not an acceptable idea to travel all the way and back for breakfast alone. And what happens when the craving comes at night?!

No worries. Motormouth to the rescue!!! Not that I can cook you a bowl or something(duh), but I shall point you to the right direction; Restoran Law Shi Fun in Bercham of Ipoh, a short distance away from the Ipoh Selatan highway exit; and near to the Tesco Extra hypermarket on Jalan Bercham.

Read more about this cheap, no frills Lou Shu Fun feast (RM26.50/USD8.30 fed six mouths!) that has been around for 7 years now ……

Lady At the Counter

Pick up a pair of tongs (not thongs), and go on a buffet frenzy (but you need to pay for each piece lah, of course!) on the spread of Yong Liew available. Just don’t take your own sweet time like Motormouth did.

Okay, so this shop in Bercham has been around for more than seven years. If you think that’s miraculously long for an eatery selling only ONE type of food, think again. The owner (Mr. Yow)’s father is STILL operating the original outlet on Jalan Pasir Puteh; the last I saw was renamed into Golden Mouse or something.

Awww …. a fish ball noodles specialist with a cutesy Disney-like name? You bet.

Cutlery & Chili Sauce

The chili sauce was spicy! But goes well with the noodles and Yong Liew. And talk about the traditional cock-brand cutlery!

All of us ordered a bowl of Kon Low Lou Shu Fun each; and sharing the serving of Yong Liew (Stuffed Fish Paste) dunked in the flavourful broth. We missed out on the Hakka noodles, and optional pieces of pig’s intestines though, as everyone was too engrossed with the prospect of slurping up the famed lou shu fun with a generous dollop of minced pork on top.

Give The Noodles a Good Toss

Mix the noodles up really well, or you can add a spoonful of their chili sauce for extra kick.

Various Yong Tau Foo

And remember to try the peppery “Fei Yuen” (Flying Balls?) with dried cuttlefish.

Fried Meatballs

… And the Kampar famous Zhar Yuen (fried meat balls, a starchy/sticky creation of a meat ball)

Eating the Lou Shu Fun here reminded us of the good old days, when we used to have ours at the outlet in Pasir Puteh, and there was once I ate here. Maybe years ago …. but I can’t be sure.

And of course, there’s also one very classic fish ball noodles stall in Pasir Pinji wet market at NIGHT. Eerie to be eating in a desolate premise? You’re wrong, for the place attracted, and STILL attracts a steady/loyal stream of customers from what I saw a few months ago. And right outside the market you can find a supposedly famous Tau Foo Fah (soybean curd), and a crispy Dai Gau Min/Ban Chang Kueh/Apom Pancake with peanuts.

Restoran Law Shi Fun

If you’re travelling on the main road of Jalan Bercham from the highway towards the older regions of Bercham village, you can’t miss this on your RIGHT. Same side with Shell station.

They are planning to open a THIRD outlet in Menglembu soon. So take note of this if you’re a die-hard fan of lou shu fun. Or even if you’re not, has this post change your mind? :)
